Description Technical Specs

This is a rare fossil prawn (shrimp) from the Green River Formation (GRF). It dates from the Eocene namely, 50 million years old. It's scientific name is Bechleja rostrata and is an extinct species of prawn (shrimp). Prawn differ from shrimp as they have branching gills and the fact that they don't brood their eggs, but release them directly into the water. While prawns and shrimp are physically similar, some believe that prawns live in freshwater and shrimp live in salt water.

This fossil prawn (shrimp) has 4 antennae, 3 complete legs and 2 partial legs. The body (carapace) is awesome in detail. It has been repaired and a stabilizing plate of matrix has been attached to the back of the plate.
This body of this fossil measures 3.25 (8.3 cm) inches from tip of rostrum to tip of telson (along it's greater curvature) and from 0.125-0.625 (0.3-1.6 cm) inches in width. The antennae range in length from 1.75-2.625 (4.5-6.7 cm) inches. The entire plate measures 7 inches (17.8cm) by 5.875 inches ( 15cm) by 0.75 inches (1.9cm) thick.
