Description Technical Specs Extended Information
This Lytoceras polyanchomenum is a highly polished fossil, uncut, ammonite that comes from Madagascar. Lytoceras lived during the Jurassic (199-145 million years ago) and right through the Late Cretaceous (145-65 million years ago). The specimen is preserved as an internal mould of the shell. Soon after death, the shell (comprised of chambers divided by septa) would have filled up with silt and eventually fossilized. The shell probably was eroded by the elements and disappeared overtime, thereby exposing the septa, which is what you see in this specimen. This particular specimen has very well-preserved suture lines and is rich brown-golden color on one side and a dark brown/charcoal gray on the other. It measures 2.55 inches in diameter and is 0.8 inches thick tapering to 0.45 inches.
