Green River Formation coprolites Madagascar coprolites
Washington State Coprolites
Coprolites are the scientific name for fossilized feces or Poop! Technically, coprolites are Trace Fossils, i.e. records of living organisms but not parts of living organisms. Our coprolites come from several different places, namely Madagascar, Washington state (USA) and Wyoming (USA). Over millions of years old, the original feces have been replaced by minerals, usually silicates, phosphates and calcium carbonates. The shape of coprolites can be quite distinct (Washington State coprolites) or less distinct (Madagascar coprolites). Sometimes spiral markings are evident. The color usually reflects the color of the minerals which replaced the feces. Green River coprolites can contain undigested food matter such as bits of bone reflecting the diet of the animal which produced them!
